Sensational Haiku Wednesday
Sensational Haiku Wednesday

Welcome to “Sensational Haiku Wednesday!”

hosted by Jenn at youknowthatblog.com  Thanks Jenn!

The basics: Haiku is simple! It is 3 non-rhyming lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables respectively (a great way to use your fingers!)

Here are Jenn's rules:

Structure: While Haiku may be written by some in other styles, for THIS meme only 5-7-5 is acceptable. At least one of your haiku must be in this format.
Theme/Prompt: We have a new prompt each week, and your haiku needs to be related to it, if not include the actual word in it. Feel free to leave a word suggestion in a comment!
Linking: When you post your link, link to the blog post with your haiku, not to the main page of your blog.
Reciprocate: If you participate and post your link on my website, you must have a link back here on your post. It’s only fair.
Folks not complying with the above risk having their links removed. Don’t make me be all “Grrrr” and stuff, it makes me grumpy! Thanks for your cooperation! P.S. This is a really busy time for me – I may not get around to everyone each week. Sorry about that, but unfortunately I need to attend to business before pleasure!

This week’s theme is: Fortitude

 Popularity

Has become more important

than our own standards.

Stand up to the crowds

Have a spine and grow a pair

back your own beliefs.

You may not like me,

but you must at least respect

my integrity.

Donation hat

For NerdWars - hats were the objects of donation.  I made a newborn hat - because one of my Rav friend's LYS's pledged to donate 500.  When I went to mail it - it was in Columbus, IN.  Tony is from Columbus, IN... it just put an extra smile on my face!

Ok- the 'flat is better

IMAG0399.jpg
original 'flat on left - modified one on right.

The shape is better - but the next one will have to start the bee stitch in the row above the first purl row.  Not sure when I'll get to that.

Somebody squished the bee.

This is another of the off-puff pattern on Ravelry, in the Tiny Owl Knits (TOK) group. It's called the "Bee Stitch Puff. Maybe its because I don't stuff mine, but it looks like somebody sat on it. I even did 2 rows knit at the beginning, because puffs tend to be taller on the top than bottom .  I also noticed an issue with the back being taller than the front - probably because of the pearl stitch rows. I actually knit across the front an extra time.

I'm going to try it again with a few modifications. I'm going to knit 2 rows knit. Then knit on front & increase on back. Purl front knit back. Then knit in front increase in back. Purl in front knit on back. Then do the pattern. Since I'll have 20 stitches on back before row 10 in pattern, I'll just knit the back until row 12 in pattern.  I think row 11, I'll just come back across the front and skip the back to try to catch up the height. I'll see how the top looks before I decide if I need to modify that.

Before & after pictures when I'm done.

Clip from yesteryear.

When my cousin Norman , whom I absolutely adored as a child ( well still do) first went to Rome, NY with the AirForce, my grandmother painted me a really bleak picture.  Maybe being of the generation of WWII wives influenced her opinions.  But she really made it sound horrid, and I pictured him sitting in one of those Nisssen huts - I pictured it as drafty - eating bad porridge.  And the only glimmer of happiness would be "mail call"

So yes, she basically traumatized the crap out of me.  So every day- yes everyday, Either between school and practice, or during lunch, or during class I would write him a letter. Some days it was informative, but many days - having nothing specific to tell him - I'd write a story in like 8 parts (in my mind the serial format would give him something to look forward to the next day. I would send him advice on finding "Miss Right"  I would make up a code and write him a letter in that code - and ask him a question in code - so he had to figure out the code and answer. (good thing he was in intelligence)

He kept ALL my letters!! All of them.  Too many for a shoebox. A BIG box.

We were talking about my letters (and he did say he enjoyed getting them in the mail) the last time he was in NJ last month.  He then e-mailed me this clipping a few days ago.  All the letters & cards on the desk behind the book were mine.  The one on the desk under the bottom corner of the book even had a picture of me glued to it!

Had a long hard day,

Need ice cold relaxation

Get my Irish on!

The pager goes off

Pull out, lights and sirens blare

Fighting raw power.

 I need some helpers,

look for potential minions

press them to service

Before y'all feel the need to comment - I do know that Guinness draught is not spelled draft.  But it's my poem! so:

For Felix

Since Felix was upset that I didn't include him in my love haikus:

Elephants mating,
Killing the catnip mousies.
Hard work for a cat

Stare out the windows,
cover the floors with baggies,
Always be prepared.

Learn to use remotes
Must tape shows that mom doesn't
Watch when she's at work.

Hexi-flat update.

I didn't do too many 'flats in January. Just 4:

IMAG0380.jpg

I made 5 flats for a NerdWars challenge this month.  It was to do a project inspired by mnemonics.  So I did:

Red skies at night, sailors delight:

IMAG0381

Red skies at dawn, sailors be warn'd.

IMAG0382

And an owl with the scraps.

IMAG0383

I did the 'flats in a slip stitch cable pattern that one of the other 'puffers in the Tiny Owl Knits group on Ravelry had designed and posted.  To give my finished quilt eventually some texture.

How cool is this?

IMAG0379

So a new policy is going into effect at work.  Rumors of it started floating around in November.  A few smart people started dealing with it in December.  Now the deadline is looming and people are finally panicking and trying to get done.  The trouble is - they all have to go through me - and the last minute people are in a crunch.

As of March 1st - all the people in the store that work freight schedules, have to have at least 2 machine licenses with which to move said freight.  It only makes sense.  If your job is to move freight, whether it be pack out - getting stuff from receiving to the floor (and getting the excess up into the overheads) or pack down- bringing that excess down and putting it on the shelf when we sell through - how can you get your job done if you can't actually get the stuff back and forth, up and down??  Right now - these people have to get other people to stop what they are doing to do it for them.  A lot of people, work these positions to get a steady schedule. Weekends off.

So as the store lift truck trainer - I've been busy.  I can't train after 10 am - and lets face it once the store starts getting crowded with people- I don't really want to. So I start dark and early at 430 am.  Twice a week to accommodate the night crew, I've been coming in at 3am.  One other detail - no matter which lift we are talking about - the training always starts outside- where it is less likely that someone can do damage.  For those that never noticed - February tends to be called... um.. winter??  It can be cold in the winter.  We have had a relatively mild winter.  But there have been a few cold mornings.

Can I tell you how tired I am of all the whining?? About the cold?? About the rain??  These people know they are training.  They know they go outside.  They are only out there for an hour. I'm out there for almost 6.  I'm not complaining.  If the cold bothers you - dress appropriately.

Finished project

IMAG0372

As some of you know, I work with carpet.  Last summer - when I was dealing with outside garden - and other people had to deal with stuff in the dept outside of the actual carpet rolls themselves, someone screwed up and ordered way to many of carpet samples we didn't need.  And so, when recently we had our styles changed for the new year there were a lot of samples that suddenly became garbage.  Carpet is ultimately made from oil - nylon, polyester, olefin are all forms of plastic that comes from oil and can be recycled.  We recycle the carpet we rip out of peoples houses.  We don't have a way of recycling samples.  So I asked for and was given permission to take a few of the packs - still wrapped in carpet.

I crocheted a bottom for them and created.... coasters!!

Many thanks to Grace, for her scrap green yarn!

    Where's Waldo?? Sort of

I haven't yet blogged about my Rhinebeck Weekend.  It is coming this week. In the meantime, let's see how observant people are.  In this picture is something blog worthy from Rhinebeck. Let's see if anyone can guess what it is!  (Min - you and Rachel are not eligible to guess) And yes - I know it's been 4 months!

    Creeepy Cute Swap

The next swap I was in was the Creepy Cute Swap.  In the questionnaire you had to say which Creepy you would love to have on your nightstand.  Your partner was supposed to make that creepy and send it with some extras.  My partner wanted a knight in shining armor. So I used Vanna's glitter yarn - held 2 strands together for his armor.  I didn't take a picture of the swap I sent... again... oops. But here is a picture of the knight.

    IMAG0353.jpg

My answer to the question was..... a Trojan... I mean it seemed like obviously the right answer.  It took Curt a few minutes to get that... you'd think he'd understand me by now...  So here is a picture of what Lisa (c-three on Rav) sent me:

    IMAG0364

That bright red flamingo is a pen!!!  It's feet are it's base!!  How freakin cool is that??  I wish I had a desk at work now!  The candle is sweet fig scented - yummy.  I don't think Lisa looks at my blog - but if she does - Thanks again Lisa!

    Swaps

Currently I'm in the midst of 5 swaps on Ravlery.  One still not in the making yet is a St Patrick's Day Creepy Cute swap- where I need to make a Creepy that somehow links to St Patrick's life - not just green!  One is a junk food/hot beverage swap- knit item optional. One is the caffeine addicts swap -  a mug, coffee, handmade item.  That one was supposed to mail out today - but I don't have her address yet! So hopefully I get it tonite - my post office closes at 1130 on Saturday! Then  a creepy cute valentine swap.  I can't open it until 7pm - so I'll post that tomorrow.

The final swap (or first considering opening/ mailing dates) was the valentine swap.  My partner was Nicole.

    IMAG0361

Here's what I got ( and no - I forgot to take a picture before I mailed mine.
Mittens and headband (perfect for covering my ears when I'm outside forklift training) seed packets - makes me want spring! socks, a book, dove chocolate, the yummiest smelling grapefruit soap- that I think her farm makes.  The cutest heart clothespins and peach raspberry green tea!

    Thanks so much Nicole!!

Just need a plate to block.

I finished my slouch beret today.  And had yarn to spare.  This project is going to be submitted for the NerdWar Challenge of ONE - so it was made with less than one skein of yarn.  More pictures to  follow after blocking.

    Found a book!

Frank Delaney was the January author for the Irish book group on Ravelry. (yes, Nascar group, NerdWars group, coffee group, hockey group, Irish book group- amazing there is time/space for knitting etc on there!) So when I went to the library - they had his first US published book.  The downside - it is 672 pages.  the upside I am already on page 70!  I only put it down because it was time to make dinner.  I love his story of the NewGrange tomb.

    Quick Monday

Long day, so I figure I'll just tell you what I just cast on this weekend.  Bundoran from the book Contemporary Irish Knits by Carol Feller.  It was excerpted in one of the Brit knitting magazines I like.  Here is a picture, from the book.  I'm making mine in red.

    Congrats Giants SuperBowl Champs

Now let's talk about the important topics,  The commercials.  Overall I think the quality of the commercials was lacking this year.  Some ad agencies were clearly trying to hard.  Many of the commercials were just plain stupid.  Apparently Go Daddy's demographic is male virgins living in mom's basement.   I totally did not get what an overweight dog,  working out to get fit enough to chase a VW has to do with the segue into Darth Vader. Other than to tie into last year's commercial which was awesome.  Then there was the Ferris Beuller commercial - what was their demographic?  People who were teenagers in the early 80's ??  I don't even know what the ad was for.  So Ad Fail.

I don't drink a lot of soda.  My favorite isn't marketed in NJ.  But if given a choice between coke & pepsi I'll take coke.  Given a choice of pepsi - I'll be thirsty.  While coke's liberal use of polar bears and penguins together irritates me.  I had to smile at the polar bear catching the bottle - of course after all the jiggling he won't be able to open it until next week.
Then there was the ad with the little dog in sneakers racing the grey hounds.  I was watching thinking - oh lord this is stupid.  Then the dog turned around just before the finish line and moonwalked across.  Ok you won me over I liked it.
My favorite commercial of the night was near the beginning of the game.  Vampires partying around a bon fire in the woods, while an Audi is driving through the woods with a cooler of blood. When the Audi gets to the clearing all the vampires begin vaporizing - because of the daylight headlights. See - it can be done, good commercial, entertaining, and I remember what it's for!
