Davey Allison died from injuries sustained in a helicopter crash in the Talledega infield the day before. I stopped following NASCAR for almost 6 years.
After the last race of the season that year ( which also saw Alan Kulwicki die on a plane crash) Rusty Wallace won the race, Dale Earnhart Sr won the championship, the two drivers did a "polish victory lap" carrying the flags of the two drivers. And yes, it still makes me tear up. Although at least it no longer makes me cry.
